DESCRIPTION:

Sophomore slump with a dreary entry COH I enjoyed the first book in the series and looked forward to this sequel. Unfortunately, this sophomore entry suffered from endless repetition of the same inner thoughts and reflections, which did nothing to further the characters or our enjoyment of them. The descriptions were fine in some places and weak in others. Joe scowled the whole book, Deanna was annoyed the whole book. Joe's parents were present in this entry but aside from their displays of affection, they remained flat characters. Thematically this book was like a broken record: Joe worried about Dee, Dee nosed in where she shouldn't, Elspeth abetted, Will was . Good Second Installment I enjoyed this book. It is thoughtful, as Deanna is thinking about and seeing the possibilities for a woman of her time and social class. The mystery is around a young woman of Dee's class who has become an actress. That freedom is counter-balanced by being socially outcast and sexually vulnerable. At the same time, Dee is with Joe's more progressive family, and she sees what a fulfilling marriage can look like, what the possibilities of a more protected freedom are. The plot is complex and interesting, with issues of birth control and homosexuality, public morality and private moral laxity at the forefront, since Oscar Wi. An enjoyable mystery The story of Deanna and Joe continues. A solid mystery that takes our characters into the world of stage acting. Shelley Freydont delivers.

Relishing her new freedom, Deanna is more interested in buying one of the fashionable new bathing costumes, joining a ladies’ bicycling club, and befriending an actress named Amabelle Deeks, all of which would scandalize her mother.   Far more scandalous is the discovery of a young man bludgeoned to death on the conservatory floor at Bonheur, the Ballards’ sumptuous “cottage.” De
