DESCRIPTION:
A brilliant find - kids will eat it up! Kids in upper-elementary and lower-middle school will love this book. It is a perfect blend of elements that will keep boys and girls engaged. Weaving historical allusions, an unpredictable plot, unusual themes (Cannibalism??? What kid can resist that?), and amazing words - it kept me smiling and my kids laughing out loud (both the male 10-year-old and female 12-year-old). As a middle school teacher, I'm excited to add it to my shelves.. The Secret of Ferrell Savage Karen Ballentine I found this book to be humorous, educational and unusual in the topics of the plot. Ferrell has many thoughts common to a young man but with a less serious focus than most. All this and you might learn new words, too! I am a Ferrell fan!. Ferrell Savage is Cool LizzyLyn123 Disclaimer: I know the author, who is a wonderfully lovely person. However, my sons (ages 9 and 12 and big fans of the Wimpy Kid books) do NOT know the author and they LOVED this book. They ate it up (pun intended!) In fact, yesterday while riding in the car, my 12 year old said, out of the blue, "Hey Mom, that Ferrell Savage Book is cool." You can't get a better review than that!
This humorous look at first crushes and family secrets is sure to be devoured.Ferrell Savage is finally twelve, and finally eligible to compete in The Big Sled Race on Golden Hill—the perfect chance to impress Mary Vittles. Middle school romance is hard enough, but cannibalism really gets in the way. Sure, the circumstances were extreme, but some facts might just be romantically indigestible. It turns out that his great, great, great uncle had an encounter with Mary’s great, great grandfather. Mary is Ferrell’s best friend…and maybe, someday, something more.Except the “more” Ferrell first finds is more information about his family. If, that is, his family secret doesn’t eat them alive.. At least now Ferrell understands why his family is vegan. But even as Ferrell and Mary encounter blackmail, a second sled race, and a particularly enticing bag of beef jerky, Ferrell realizes that he might still have a chance with Mary. And the encounter was, well, let’s just say…edible
An additional purchase, primarily for libraries in Colorado that are looking for titles with local connections.—Amy Seto Musser, Denver Public Library . In 1874, Alfred Packer was accused of murdering and eating his five traveling companions while stuck in a snowstorm. From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Unlike everyone else in Golden Hill, Colorado, 12-year-old Ferrell Savage is thinking less about winning the Big Sled Race and more about impressing his best friend, Mary Vittles. He doesn't win, but instead becomes a local hero when his lounge-chair-turned-sled takes a death-defying tumble. Set in a fictional town, Gill's novel uses real events and people from Colorado history as the foundation for this modern story. Mary is not impressed, but the new kid Bruce Littledood notices and threatens to reveal a dark secret about Mary and Ferrell's famili
