Book is a wonderful resource about St Arrived quickly. Book is a wonderful resource about St. Francis. Recommend it highly. Indispensable and inspiring English-language refeence Scholars and lovers of Francis of Assisi will find much to treasure in this first volume of the early documents series. Detailed footnotes add to the reader's understanding of Francis and early Franciscans, while providing insight into the editors' specific decisions. Al. "St Francis Read" according to Jude Patch Guglielmino. Well written and easy to read. Very factual and well thought out. I recommend this book highly for anyone interested in the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi.
Each volume will reflect different aspects of Francis's work and thought. The book contains a life of Francis written in 1228-29 by Thomas of Celano, as much theology as biography; a biography by Julian of Speyer; and a versified life of Francis written between 1230 and 1241. This volume contains writings of Francis on such diverse subjects as Prayer Before the Crucifix, Exhortations to Clergy, Rule for Hermitages, and A Salutation of the Virtues. Helpful footnotes and Scripture references in the margins make the work even more useful. There is wonderful variety among the writings included here, and the chronological arrangement reveals the development of Francis's thought.
