About the Author FRANCO ZAPPA was born in November 1965. His research interests are in microelectronics, pho- tonics and instrumentation in the fields of 2D imaging and 3D ranging of light-starving scenes, by means of single photon counting detectors in Silicon and InGaAs/InP. In 1989 he graduated cum laude in Electronic Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and in 1993 he received the Ph.D. . degree in Electronics and ICT Engineering.
